I came across this short photoessay on the New York Times about various food tattoos on chefs. The one below belongs to Jill Barron of De Cero, a Mexican restaurant in Chicago. Clearly, I have at least one thing in common with her. Mucho restecpto Jill.

I love food and my cousin once broached the topic of me getting one someday and I thought hell yeah! That’d be pretty awesome! Especially a food related one! So I’ve been thinking about what to get. Even though it might be sometime before I do get one.

My father, being rather conservative, was already displaying signs of consternation at the aforementioned conversation I had with my fully decked out cousin, who has 2 full sleeves and he’s covered down to the calves. Still, I’m not really worried by dad’s worried frown and instead, it sort of spurs me on all the more.

So anyway, I’m definite its going to be food related. I’m quite averse to knives though. They just give off a way too screamo vibe. Utensils might do the trick but I’m not too sure. A Chinois reflects my ancestry but looks dumb. A ladle perhaps but that has got hardly anything to do with me. Actual food items can be hard to translate as well. I like a wide variety of stuff, so picking one that would also look good would be hard. Text, on the other hand, holds up well and is relatively simple. That’s probably going to be what I’ll be looking at. I’m also tossing it up between a ring around the collarbone in script (kinda trendwhorish I know) or across the back (hate that I can’t see it) or across the belly, perhaps quite apt I suppose. We’ll see. It’s that or a sectioned piggie.

A recent holiday revealed the need for objects with the power to displace time. An intensive research program undertaken by none other than myself revealed that said objects needed to have the ability to absorb light as one of its qualities. I present the following 2 objects as conclusive proof of the results of my studies. I also point to aforementioned object aka Xperia as another device with similar capabilities.

Nintendo DS Lite

iPod Classic 160Gb

Souffle de Godard

Wannabe Francophiliac’s musings part 3. AKA Godard’s 1st film. Breathless. A bout de Souffle.

Starring Jean-Paul Belmondo as a low-life who thinks himself as Humphrey Bogart and Jean Seberg, who plays the Katherine Hepburn-esque girl he lusts after, Breathless is close to half a century old but its still full of life.

In the interim before I posted this, I also caught Alphaville which I felt was pretty tortuous. I sort of felt like I was a subject in Alphaville actually. I like certain sequences but found it really hard to accept the visage of the imaginary dystopia it portrayed. So it was with a slight trepidation that I approached Breathless. Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint.

I have to say I have a particular dislike for the lead character, who is a louse, a parasite. He is a car thief, a burglar and an ass. Yet, he pulls the girl, the free spirited American journalist who lives via naivete. Why do “independent” women feel this urge to fuck the “rebel”? Inexplicable. Still, at least she finally woke up towards the end.

The film itself is pretty enjoyable. Belmondo’s character, Michel Poiccard, steals a car and then speeds around in it, only to get noticed by the police. He then kills a cop and goes into hiding in Paris whilst he also tries to seduce Seberg’s innocent Patricia Franchini. Patricia isn’t sure why the hell she likes him so she lets shit happen so she can find out the obvious. Ok, she’s American so her French isn’t quite up to scratch and she’s new in town, sort of at least, so she’s keen to have some fun but Michel isn’t particularly attractive. I guess girls just like rogues, just that sometimes they blur the rogues with the assholes.

The pacing is pretty quick so you’re never lost on the action. Its also interspersed with random musings on love and lust. Francois Truffaut appears in mid-film as some sort of writer who spews out philosophical aphorisms. The heart of the film is French but it lurches towards Hollywood. I felt like it was a n homage/assessment of Hollywood’s great romance films but it also introduced something new.

The music is brilliant as is the visual style. The editing, the cuts, the screen closing in on important but small figures soon to play a greater role, its quite engaging and easy on the eye. This is particularly apparent in how Godard shows the police closing in on Michel. From a newspaper photo of the slain cop, to the screen closing in on the inspector who is chasing him till, you get the sense that the capture would be inevitable.

I can see the “stuff” laden within Breathless that has spilled out into cinema today. The references to Hollywood and America, the characters, it almost feels like a proto Tarantino film. The thin plot might be a bit of a pity in a sense, as I wished there was more to it. Yet, given the title, I’m sure that was also the intent. This was a film made for an instant, an evocation of a mood, a feeling, a flirtation, a brief romance or a quick shag. It didn’t quite leave me gasping but I have rubbed my lips ala Belmondo/Bogart on more than one occasion today.

Incu @ the TGV has expanded to 2 separate stores and is now reopened, one for the guys and one for the girls. They stock the same stuff plus more labels like Springcourts and Loden Dager for instance. It actually feels cosier and I like the feeling like their stock has increased tenfold. There’s a whole rack of Chronicles gear and the shoes are everywhere. So tempted to pick up more stuff. I have not bothered to check out the girls store, which kinda sucks because it now makes the difficult task of meeting the hot chicks who frequent the place nigh impossible.

Thanks for ruining my life Incu.

I raved about Campos before and for good reason. Bringing friends there is probably one of the funnest things to do. Seeing their faces light up and then gleefully slurping, spooning, swirling and licking away is the benefit of such gastronomic charity.

Their Caffe Latte has the densest, smoothest milk foam of any coffee joint in Sydney/wherever I’ve tasted thus far. Goes down a treat and that my friends is how you do a leaf.

I didn’t know they served Caffe Mochas. I always thought it was just purist coffee but I have to say, its a pretty perfectly balanced coffee vs. cocoa thing they got goin on. And how kickass does it look?

The piece de resistance, Campos’ Affogatos are next level shiet. You basically have to savor one to understand the meaning of life.

I left out a few other drinks they serve due to camera issues. These pics above come courtesy of a new convert. Something unique they serve is a really nice expresso with sparkling water which is sour as shit but seriously refreshing, like an intense coffee soda. That’s something to try but not really one for everyone. But again, and I have to stress this, if you have to have one drink at Campos, make it an Affogato. Maybe next time, I will brave it all and get their ristretto which I’ve heard has resulted in temporary deaths/out of body experiences.

Michelin X SG

According to the Straits Times today, Singapore will be getting a Michelin guide, this after their Japanese version released last year received mixed reviews and a couple of rejections. My question is if they will hand awards to the hawkers as well, seeing as how integral a part of Singaporean cuisine they are. I have my doubts if Singapore really has enough top quality restaurants to warrant such attention or if the Michelin guide just wants more filling of their pockets. It’d be pretty cool if one of the hundreds of uncles who devote their lives to Char Kway Teow can stand toe to toe with Thomas Keller though. Or will said uncle refuse the award, spouting something along the lines of “Mai ka jeow la, yao char kway teow qing pai dui hor. Knnbccb, simi lan jiao meeseelin star? Kum lan jiao la, wa bo see gan gong jiao eh hor!” as he waves his mighty wok chan, flames flaring in the face of a humbled man wearing a ridiculously fat white rubber costume, melting its condescension in one sweet moment of flailing bean sprouts.
